These tests help determine how well the organs and systems of the body are functioning.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nDiagnostic tests include:<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<ul><li>Blood tests can be performed as necessary to assess the proper functioning of your pet\u2019s kidneys, liver, pancreas, and endocrine system including the thyroid gland and adrenal glands.<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Urine tests can detect similar problems.<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Depending on your pet\u2019s condition, we may recommend further diagnostic tests such as radiography (X-rays), endoscopy (internal scoping), ultrasound or surgery.<\/li><\/ul><br \/>\n<\/div>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n                    <div class=\"pxl--item \">\r\n                <h4 class=\"pxl-item--title\" data-target=\"#pxl-accordion-46b3a74pxl_accordion-4d529d1-6784\">\r\n                    <span>Vaccinations<\/span>\r\n                <\/h4>\r\n                <div id=\"pxl-accordion-46b3a74pxl_accordion-4d529d1-6784\" class=\"pxl-item--content\" >It\u2019s important for your pet to receive vaccines in order to stay healthy and have a good quality of life. Some pet vaccinations require a booster to keep them effective.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThere are two categories of vaccinations: core pet vaccines and non-core vaccines. Core pet vaccinations are those recommended for every pet, while non-core vaccines may be advised based on your pet\u2019s lifestyle, such as your cat or dog is outdoors only or is boarded often. Many vaccines can be given to pets as young as 6 weeks old.<br \/>\nSee a list of recommended vaccines.<\/div>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n                    <div class=\"pxl--item \">\r\n                <h4 class=\"pxl-item--title\" data-target=\"#pxl-accordion-869e6b8pxl_accordion-4d529d1-6784\">\r\n                    <span>Parasites<\/span>\r\n                <\/h4>\r\n                <div id=\"pxl-accordion-869e6b8pxl_accordion-4d529d1-6784\" class=\"pxl-item--content\" ><b>Intestinal Parasites<\/b><br \/>\nIntestinal parasites are a common problem with puppies and kittens but most can be easily treated once they are diagnosed. Roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms are the most common intestinal parasites in puppies and kittens. Other intestinal parasites include microorganisms such as coccidia and Giardia.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nWe recommend having at least two stool samples checked during your puppy \/ kitten\u2019s first year followed by annual fecal exams as an adult. Your dog or your cat will be constantly exposed to parasites, many of which are transmissible to people.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nAll kittens and puppies should be routinely dewormed. A negative fecal sample does not necessarily indicate absence of parasites; eggs are shed intermittently.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<b>Flea and Tick<\/b><br \/>\nA flea problem on your pet means a flea problem in your home. Understanding the flea life cycle and methods for its control can be a daunting task. See the flea control information in the Pet Health Library of our site.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<b>Heartworm Disease<\/b><br \/>\nWe follow the recommendations of the American Heartworm Society and other experts in advising annual heartworm testing and prevention for all of our canine patients. Dogs are infected with heartworms when they are bitten by an infected mosquito. This means that even indoor dogs and those that do not have contact with other pets are still susceptible.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe only way to prevent the spread of this often fatal disease is to test your pets and place them on a preventative medication. With our in-house testing capabilities, we can tell within minutes if your dog is infected and begin steps toward treating the disease. It is the most frequently diagnosed health problem in pets. Common signs of oral disease include tartar buildup, red and swollen gums, bad breath, changes in eating or chewing habits, pawing at the face and generalized depression.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nDr. Djelmis should evaluate your pet\u2019s dental health at least once a year. Dental disease can affect other organs in the body: bacteria in the mouth can get into the blood stream and may cause serious kidney infections, liver disease, lung disease, and heart valve disease. Oral disease can also indicate that another disease process is occurring elsewhere in a pet\u2019s body.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nRegular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet\u2019s teeth. We use modern and safe ultrasound to clean each tooth thoroughly \u2013 above and below the gum line. Dental technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup.
